The Golden Circle: three ways to drive the same loop.

Thingvellir, the Geysir field and Gullfoss sit within 120 kilometres of the capital, so every operator drives the same three stops. What separates them is the fourth: a crater, a hot spring, a tomato farm, or a lagoon on the way home.

The rift valley walk first, Strokkur going off every few minutes, then Gullfoss dropping into its canyon. Most buses add Kerid crater, which is worth the ten minutes.

Identical three stops, then Fontana or the Secret Lagoon while the light goes. You come back warm instead of stiff, which matters more than it sounds after a day on a coach.
Golden Circle, then a lagoon before dark
The loop plus a timed slot at the Blue Lagoon on the way back toward Keflavik. It is the most expensive way to do both, and the only way to do both without a car.
Northern lights over Iceland run on a season, not a schedule.
From late August to mid-April the nights are dark enough to see them. Coaches and boats drive to whichever gap in the cloud the forecast offers, and most operators put you on another night free if the sky closes in. Between late May and late July there is no darkness at all — that is the midnight sun instead.
What an Iceland day actually costs.
Iceland is expensive and the spread is wide. What separates a fifty-dollar morning from a two-hundred-dollar day is almost entirely transport, glacier gear and how many people share the vehicle.

The south coast is one road and a full day.
Route 1 runs east past Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss to the black sand and basalt columns at Reynisfjara, and the good days stop at all three before the light goes. Keep driving and you reach the glacier tongues at Solheimajokull; keep going again and it is Jokulsarlon, which is a fourteen-hour day out of the capital.

Waterfalls and whales exist elsewhere. Snorkelling the gap between two continents, walking inside a glacier and sitting in a river the ground heats are Icelandic answers to Icelandic geology.

Silfra is the crack in Thingvellir where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, filled with meltwater that spent decades filtering through porous lava. Visibility runs past a hundred metres and the water sits near 2°C all year, which is why every operator asks your height, weight and shoe size at booking: the drysuit is fitted before you arrive.

Blue ice under Vatnajokull
Natural ice caves open when autumn meltwater drains out of the glacier and the roof freezes hard enough to enter, roughly November to March. Guides re-scout them every season because the ice moves and last winter's cave may not exist. For a summer trip the answers are the Katla cave under Myrdalsjokull and the man-made tunnel bored into Langjokull, both of which run year round.

The bathing habit
Hot water arrives here out of the ground, so bathing is an ordinary daily thing rather than a spa treat. The Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon sell timed entry and fill weeks ahead in summer. Reykjadalur is a free hot river an hour from town with a 45-minute uphill walk attached, and the neighbourhood pool costs about the same as a coffee.

Skjalfandi Bay off Husavik is the most reliable whale water in the country and Eyjafjordur out of Akureyri runs a close second, with humpbacks through the summer and Myvatn, Godafoss and Dettifoss within reach of the same bed. It is a short flight from the capital or two days of driving. Either way it is its own trip, not a day trip.
